Trademarks, Copyrights and Registered Names:
Rhodesians Worldwide®
is a trademarked name registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (http://www.uspto.gov)
Registration Number 3328658
While we wish to cooperate in the use of the name with organisations around the world, the magazine also needs to protect its rights to use the name and to not have ongoing confusion between the network that has been built up over 40 years by the magazine, and its associated entities, and those who might wish to gain from the widespread recognition of our name. Our goal is to serve Rhodesians and those interested in Rhodesia without fear of others using our name for purposes of their own gain.
A trademark is diluted when the use of similar or identical trademarks in other non-competing markets means that the trademark in and of itself will lose its capacity to signify a single source. In other words, unlike ordinary trademark law, dilution protection extends to trademark uses that do not confuse consumers regarding who has made a product. Instead, dilution protection law aims to protect sufficiently strong trademarks from losing their singular association in the public mind with a particular product, perhaps imagined if the trademark were to be encountered independently of any product (e.g., just the word Pepsi spoken, or on a billboard). Under trademark law, dilution occurs either when unauthorized use of a mark “blurs” the “distinctive nature of the mark” or “tarnishes it.” Likelihood of confusion is not required. 15 U.S.C §§ 1127, 1125(c).

History:
In 2006 an attempt was made in the U.S.A. by some well connected individuals, who wished to prevent the magazine from operating under its historical name, to trademark the name “Rhodesians Worldwide” . This was thwarted through the quick thinking of a very well-respected and successful Rhodesian who happens also to be black-mazvita shamwari. The USPTO granted Rhodesians Worldwide magazine the trademark to the wording “Rhodesians Worldwide” and since then there has been a continued effort to undermine the work of the magazine to keep the spirit alive. This runs contra to the beliefs of the magazine that all Rhodesian related organisations should be working for a common goal, and that is to preserve our history in an ethical and moral way which goes to benefit all Rhodesians and those that may investigate our history when we are but dust. We will continue to strive to unite all Rhodesian associations in a common goal, but we reserve the right to assert our trademark where we believe that the magazine’s existence is threatened by the unauthorized use of the name Rhodesians Worldwide by those who do not share our goal of preserving the history of our country and wish only to benefit personally from our good name.
